Helen Shaw began her music career aged 9 when she saw an older girl play the clarinet in assembly and really wanted to learn how to play it too. Clarinet lessons were switched to Saxophone lessons when Helen had reached grade 5 and her teacher needed a Saxophone player in the Shropshire County School of Music Concert Band when she was 14 years old. She remained part of the County ensembles until aged 18. Helen also took up piano lesson aged 12 and completed Grade 7 to Merit aged 17. After studying A level Music at New College Saxophone Helen then moved to Canterbury ChristChurch University College to complete her degree in Music and Applied Social Science. At this point Helen had decided to become a Secondary School Music teacher and so concentrated on her Performance skills with the Saxophone and Piano.
She stayed on in Canterbury to complete her PGCE and gained her first professional position in Kent as Head of Music at Valley Park Community School. Helen moved back to Shropshire after a few years and held the post of Head of Music at The Wakeman School for many years. She is now teaching at Idsall School as Head of Music.
As part of all three positions Helen has built up the extra-curricular ensembles as well as produced many school musicals within the role of Musical Director and taught National Curriculum Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 Music.
Helen has also taken to the stage as part of the ensemble for many musicals and concerts with local companies over the years.
